On a number of forums that I visit I find mothers asking for advice about what to wear when they’re breastfeeding. Many of the responses basically tell the mum that she should avoid wearing dresses, and just wear 2 layers on top – one to pull up and one to pull down, so she can breastfeed.
This baffles me.
I mean, sure we don’t want to spend too much money on clothes but with all of the options for breastfeeding clothes these days, why wouldn’t you buy a few good quality breastfeeding tops and breastfeeding dresses to feel stylish and comfortable? It’s bad enough when you’re a new mum and you’re sleep deprived, coping with the complete life change and a new little baby without feeling frumpy as well!
So, if you’re buying clothes anyway, why not buy clothes that you can feel stylish and comfortable in? Clothes that make easy and discrete breastfeeding a breeze, wherever you are? Many of my customers are so thrilled with the stylish breastfeeding clothes that they buy, they plan to pass them onto friends, or to continue to wear them after breastfeeding.
Maternity Wear vs Breastfeeding Clothes
Here’s the thing. Many women buy a stylish maternity wardrobe for the 6 months of pregnancy that they have a big bump, but then when it comes to breastfeeding, friends tell them to “make do” with frumpy t-shirts over singlets or their old maternity clothes. Why? Having some gorgeous breastfeeding dresses in your wardrobe can make you feel amazing when you're heading out!
Ideally, you want to be buying maternity clothes that include breastfeeding access so you can continue to wear them into your forth trimester (while your body goes back to normal). All being well, you can also start investing in some more fitted breastfeeding clothes to make day to day life more enjoyable. You may find that your maternity clothes have way too much fabric through the front after a while.
You may be breastfeeding for a while…
The World Health Organisation recommends breastfeeding exclusively for 6 months, and then for at least 2 years, or until you are ready to wean. That’s a long time to be feeling frumpy. Many of my customers come in with their 2nd or third baby and say “oh I wish I’d found these clothes with my first baby!”. They buy quite a lot of tops and dresses because they know how important good quality breastfeeding clothes are to making life easier, and to feeling fabulous.
I, personally, have been pregnant or breastfeeding now for 6 years. I can say, with my hand on my heart, that all of my maternity and breastfeeding clothes have been worn to death and the good quality clothes have, by far, been the best investment over any of the cheaper alternatives.
Feeling stylish is important too!
It is amazing how a nice breastfeeding dress or top in your wardrobe can lift your mood. It’s lovely to have something to put on when you’re going out, and even better if it is something that you can mix and match to wear in a number of different ways. With stylish breastfeeding clothes, you end up wearing them all the time and definitely end up with a very low cost per wear!
Over to you! What are your favourite breastfeeding dresses and tops?
